Higher Education Partnerships

West Texas A&M University and Amarillo College provide opportunities for high school students to receive college credit for high school courses or to attend college or university classes for dual credit. WTAMU students and staff are often on district campuses, serving as resource persons, student teachers, and in other ways that benefit student learning. Two of the more unusual opportunities for Canyon students are:

  • The unique Pre-University Program (PUP) offers eligible high school students the opportunity to enroll in two approved university courses at WTAMU each semester. Upon completion of the classes, students earn both high school and university credit.
  • A partnership with Amarillo College enables high school students to receive Emergency Medical Technician certification along with dual credit at both the college and the high school.

Programs and Curriculum

Canyon ISD teachers and administrators work within Professional Learning Communities to ensure high levels of learning for all. These educators focus onthe learning of every student, working collaboratively to ensure student success. Teachers and administrators hold themselves accountable for results.

The district’s curriculum support system in English/Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies is CSCOPE, which was developed by a collaboration of Education Service Centers and a team of content experts representing all areas of Texas. It is directly aligned with the required Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills and based on the most current research-based practices in education.

The curriculum in CISD is relevant and rigorous. Balanced Literacy and Balanced Math are the programs driving those two subjects, and the district offers a Gifted/Talented program, Pre-Advanced Placement and Advanced Placement for students who desire more rigorous coursework. Courses that support the core curriculum include Forensics, AP Statistics, American Sign Language, and Journalism.

A number of Career and Technology programs offer national certifications or licensure. These include Pharmacy Technician, Certified Nurse Aid, Servsafe Culinary Arts, A+ certification in Computer Maintenance, and Microsoft Office Specialist (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Outlook) certification.
